Xenogears Remake

If there were a gears remake what would you guys like to see changed/not changed?

Personally I would love it if they kept the sprite based art style with the combo turn based combat in it (however on the low chances it even gets remade I feel like they would go full 3D anyway lol)

Would be awesome if they fleshed out the parts that were in the 2nd disk cause it felt quite rushed, maybe we could play those scenes rather than just reading about them or they could add stuff from perfect works. I don't know who has the rights to perfect works or if square would be allowed to implement ideas from it lol but it would be cool!

and I'd love to see voice acting in it. Modern rpg's have spoiled me quite a bit so when I went to play gears a couple of years ago it was hard to concentrate on all the text (especially during the last bit of the game) But what sort of voice acting would it even have? would they go the xenoblade route and have UK/Australian
accents or more of a FF approach with neutral/American sounding accents?

also I have no idea if this is a suitable topic for a general discussion or if it warrants opening its own thread lol so sorry in advance.

Yeah that's exactly what I would want as well! the handrawn looking sprites would be a great fit imo. Obviously the gear fights would still have to be in 3D but I think they could make it work.

no idea how they would do the overworld though... same as before with an overhead view? or go full 3d roamable world? but then the transition between overworld and battle would be pretty jarring if they kept the 2d battle style.

Sorry I'm raiding in FFXIV at the moment. I think the entire game should stick to the 2D style, but for the over world I think would be fine if they fixed the draw distance and reworked all of the textures and maybe added some weather and lighting effects.

Yeah like TWEWY! My mind also went to Octopath Traveler.

For disclosure: I'm speaking as someone who has tried but never completed Xenogears (boo, how do I run this site?! boo).

I'd love to see it keep the sprite style because I think it had a lot of charm. Keeping the 90s sci-fi vibe would go a long way towards letting it stand out in the current gaming atmosphere too. Since I haven't completed it, I can only really speak to what I played and what put me off from finishing it. I don't know if it's controversial, but the platforming mechanic seemed super unnecessary (it added nothing to the experience besides making certain areas more frustrating) and from what I experienced of it I am of the opinion that it needs to go. But I really liked the battle system. I think if they redid it to capture the good things people cherish the game for (the story, the style, the RPG mechanics, the mechs) at their fullest potential and streamlined things in that direction (and add a few fancy things like more anime cutscenes and voice acting), it would be a hell of a remake and it wouldn't even need fancy FF7R graphics to do it.

Oh man I have some words about this x)

I think Xenogears would look great in the 3D style of Xenoblade Definitive Edition (IIRC the artist for Xenogears also worked on Xenoblade so it shouldn't be that much of a drastic style difference if at all). It would definitely appeal to younger audiences who have played XC1/2. Though taking into consideration how huge Xenogears is, it'd be a ton of work to be remade into 3D (Gears, Ygg, overworld, etc...) , so it'd likely be split into parts like FF7R is. That being said, I totally wouldn't mind sticking to a 2D style similar to Octopath Traveller. Like jessiray said, it does have a charm to it! It'd be cute and a lot less of a workload :p

About the battle system, I like the Deathblows but it's a hassle grinding them and it's what I struggled with most when playing the game. I think it'd be better if DBs were unlocked at certain levels, rather than inputting random combinations and hoping they're similar to any DB you have yet to unlock ... I found out pretty late that it didn't work that way and spent a long while grinding out DBs before the final dungeon x)

I'd also like some of Xenogears' themes and romance to be rewritten, specifically regarding the whole "a man and a woman are fated to be together" which I think is kindaaa outdated ^^; Something along the lines of "love regardless of gender" would work better today. Also the whole forced romance between Bart & Margie needs to be scrapped, like, completely lol

Speaking of Margie, her and Ramsus should be made playable because yes.

One more thing I'd wish for, which is probably never going to happen if ever, but I'd looove to see a prequel of the events in the years leading up to Xenogears, such as a Jugend arc, the Neo Elements, Sigurd's escape to Aveh, Jesiah's betrayal against Solaris, etc. Chapter 1 of the Anthology & an expansion of it would be amazing in its own game. Playing as the Neo Elements would be incredible!

And there ends my giant rant x) It's a lot, but TBH I'd be satisfied with just a remaster of the game. More people deserve to play Xenogears!!

Personally I would be more for a graphical style like FFXIV or Persona/Catherine (as much as I don't like Catherine) - something that kind of isn't old-style sprites yet isn't FFVIIR or The Last Of Us 2 either. Having played FFXIV I can say doing Gear combat in that visual style would be amazing (can you imagine Weltall-ID in the style of the Primals?)

I would say the platforming could go or stay, although I would like an official save state/skip option in if it stayed, especially if the Babel Tower platforming is changed to be like the Kugane Tower/Leap of Fate from XIV (nooooooooooooo)

TW: mental illness, dissociative identity disorder, spoilers: DEFINITELY would like to see the entire mess they made of DID fixed. Like seriously, get a system who's a sensitivity reader capable of handling this shit without being triggered or upset by it and consult with some actual therapists like say Bessel Van der Kolk and rewrite almost everything dealing with the Fei system OR OR OR leave it as is, but put in context that clarifies that everyone is being so awful and ignorant and "treating" Fei system in a way almost guaranteed to make him snap a few years later and make Id kill off all the remaining survivors for hurting them is because their psychological knowledge is limited thanks to the Gazel's oppression or something.

Would definitely like Disc 2 to be fleshed out a LOT more. Would love the world to totally be built out on the idea that it seems to be in canon - where there's just so much to explore, neat little details everywhere, the setting of the planet just almost being its own character of the setting. That's stuff I love about the game and I would love to see more of it, just the setting of the world given more expansion and life.

Sigurd and Ramsus as playable characters at some point or other.

Liquid Sky being a bridge between the ships' crash and Lahan, and ideally with playable Sigurd from the above, getting to walk around and explore Etrenank/Etamananki from his point of view at the time, and getting to plan and execute his escape from Solaris and Bart's rescue from the palace... and also would like to do that entire thing where they're freeing Bledavik as an active time event, where you're with him and Citan there AND with your party at the crypts going after Andvari...

TW: reference to relationships, proposal of choices there Also would like to see the entire Bart/Margie thing dropped completely (seriously, incest is not cool and just makes everyone look grosser for it). And for as much as I like Citan/Fei and appreciate that subtext I notice between them, I would say it should probably be dropped/cut because of how it would come off as grooming/horrifically problematic to people who approach the text with a post Voltron anti mindset where any such hint is problematic/upsetting regardless of the characters both being adults, where the modern fiction critical approach is less "is it the safest/best you can get within the setting with the characters and are they both consenting adults within that world they inhabit" and more of "it must conform to 2015+ US IRL standards of what is allowable and moral."

I would support the idea of giving Fei the choice between Bart and Elly and making that a love point/decision point setup where you can get either path (because there's nothing truly objectionable on either an ethical or a canonical basis with Bart as an option for Fei - same age, they first meet when Fei is 18 so there's not even a place to assume things could have been grooming, same effective race within setting and same knowledge/intelligence level as both Lambs, he's as much of a reincarnation as Elly is, etc) because I think that would be cool, but then that is just me.


Would also like to see an alternate ending mechanic inspired by the Zohar Probability Modifier + the game's originally going to be a Chrono game that includes that above thing but also more: What *if* you somehow disabled the Gaetia Key? What *if* you have the option to actually make peace with Id and treat him with respect rather than just erase him? What *if* other junctures in the setting went different ways?

Honestly the only thing I really want in a potential Xenogears remake is Margie being playable and rebalancing some of the party members cuz i never got a chance to use rico with him being too slow. Maybe add some more sidequest and explain the deathblow system better.

The deathblow system definitely needs fixed/explained because I don't know how anyone navigates that system without a guide these days.
