Hi, having been inspired by whyfish's thread on favourite relationships .... I was interested in people's thoughts on the best baddies? I realise that this next bit might be a slight contravention of forum boundary rules (if so, sorry!), but I'd be quite keen to include Gears in the mix here too as, like Saga, it has a whole raft of really excellent antagonists.

I'll offer up for initial consideration: Albedo (genuinely terrifying in places - and NOBODY should ever be allowed to hurt Momo), Margulis (the character development at the end where he recognises he's been tricked but still has his pride is really well done), Ramsus from Gears (unlike Margulis, a baddie where you kind of feel bad for him almost from the get go but he's somehow still a proper rival).

and NOBODY should ever be allowed to hurt Momo
absolutely, protect MOMO at all costs 👏😤

But speaking of antagonists who also should not be allowed near MOMO, I love me some Margulis. Like, I would run in the opposite direction from anyone who espoused his ideology in real life, but I love that he's such a grandiose and ultimately tragic figure, committed to those ideals to the point of self-destruction. Also he's rocking that purple/mauve color scheme and I have mad respect for that.

Voyager's pretty interesting to me as well, for wildly different reasons. He's like a walking dead baby joke an extremely online edgelord with a god complex, which is terrifying in a contemporary sort of way.

Oh, and unironically Sellers. Just an unrepentant shameless opportunistic bastard, plus Dr. Strangelove reference.

ETA I should probably include Andrew Cherenkov on here but I don't even see him as an antagonist, just a highly relatable victim of his circumstances, and I think he needs a hug or several. 🥺

That is one awesome reply, thank you! I literally couldn't agree more on all of it .... other than possibly Sellers who I was always kind of "meh" about, the game just didn't really seem to need him in any way really (to be fair though, I also hadn't appreciated the Dr Strangelove thing till now though either).

Oh wow, I think that in Xeno, the villains are something the games really excel at. Like a lot. There are too many good ones to pick from, but I think Virgil is up there for me from Xenosaga. I like Virgil even though he is a weirdo, but I just like how they really humanized him in the 3rd Saga game and I feel like out of all of the Testaments he was the only one to hold a mirror up to Shion like that she was guilty of some of the same things that she was criticizing the Testaments for and I thought his growth was really impressive considering how few scenes we actually got.

Oh yeah, how could I forget Virgil? He definitely grew on me, and I thought the resolution of his arc in XS3 was one of the most emotionally resonant scenes in that game (I have plenty of gnosified salt about the way my other favs' story lines were handled in XS3, but I'll save that for a different thread or just write more smad fanfiction about it). It just stuck the landing flawlessly and I wouldn't change a thing about it. I also think he has the most relatable motivation out of all the Testaments (I can kinda squint my way into Voyager's headspace sometimes bc why wouldn't I have an obsessive all-consuming crush on jan sauer amirite but it is definitely not a place I want to hang out in), and Febronia is precious and deserves the world. ;A; I also really like his role as a foil to Shion re: her attitude towards Realians, and the way he kind of calls her out on that.

I personally liked Krelian in Xenogears.
A very worthy choice in my opinion too, not least as he is probably the most ambiguous of all the series antagonists (not to mention probably the only one you get to see in the nip in a FMV, at least as far as I can recall ....)

My favorite is Grahf. He's Darth Vader, but zanier, is very memorable, has an awesome mech and is very well written in his motivation, relationship to the player and the game's lore. All the Xenogears villains are 10/10, but Grahf is an 11/10.
