What have you been watching recently?

My husband and I started watching Higarashi: When They Cry (the original version) over October for Halloween. We're excited to get caught up so we can watch the reboot. Before that we really enjoyed Beastars and Dorohedoro.

Consider this a recommendation thread. What have you seen and particularly enjoyed recently? :)

After somehow missing it in childhood I have slowly been watching Cardcaptor Sakura for the first time and I think it holds up pretty well for what it is.

Also some people from Xenochat we've been very slowly making our way through Legend of Galactic Heroes (the original OVA) and it's not the best show ever but somehow we were able to get 4 people at once to watch it which is insane. It's taken us over a year!

I've been watching Symphogear and while it has its issues, I did enjoy it. It's one of those shows where you just need to turn your brain off and take it at face value. The music and action is really great.

Been trying to keep on rewatching the whole of Bo-bobo since I got my hands on the full series. Also trying to watch the entirety of Jojo in English, though I'm annoyed parts 4 and 5 aren't on Netflix (yet, hopefully).
They are on Crunchyroll though!

Hopefully they bring the rest of jojo to netflix soon. They're getting the Rohan OVAs.

Are you watching dub or sub?

I got a Hidive account to watch Legend of Galactic Heroes in its entirety. Before that I think the most up to date anime I watched had been the new JJBA series, but that was when Part 4 was new. I also can't recommend Dragon Ball Super Broly enough!

I'm super glad you were able to get access to it again but just know that it takes a lot of mental energy. Watching it for a year with the fam and we have 5 episodes left. We're only watching like 2-3 episodes a week though.

I heard Dr. Stone was getting a new season in January today and I'm very excited for it. I highly enjoyed the first season so to see things ramp up in the second one should be fun. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes shounen who hasn't tried it, especially if you enjoy learning little science tidbits,

I loved Dr. Stone! I am not into that much anime nowadays, but Dr. Stone was super fun and I got invested in the inventions that he would make!

Jerami really liked Dr. Stone too, I think! I saw bits of it while he was watching and it seemed really interesting. My attention span is pretty busted these days so I can't recommend anything directly, but Jerami watches a lot of cool stuff. I think the one he watched most recently that he liked a lot was called Toradora? (Jerami says it gave him the feels like Clannad but was less emotionally devastating.)

I have seen bits and pieces of both Clannads a lot but have never made it through the whole thing on my own. Maybe I would have more patience for it now but back when it never quite grabbed me (even though the premise was quite interesting). Dr. Stone was also quite good, watched it a while back and liked it quite a lot. I kinda watched a lot of anime earlier this year and took a break recently but I'm back to them now. This year so far I watched and really liked a lot. Carol and Tuesday really got me with it's musical stuff, Anohana hit me with some crazy feels, which in hindsight maybe watching it and Violet Evergarden back to back wasn't the best choice, but ohhhh weeeeell.

I ended up watching a lot more isekai this year than I thought I ever would in my life because I usually find them uninspired... but damn they're proving me wrong lately. I never thought I would enjoy 'Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon' but I am now shamefully (to those who judge me based on glancing at it) admit that I enjoyed it quite a lot. Re:Zero season 2 also grabbed me pretty well and I put that show off initially for years. I was wrong to judge it by it's cover as well. Rising of the Shield Hero was also a pretty fun watch and subverted a few of my expectations. Definitely would recommend Re:Zero the most out of all of those.

Then there's the anime I picked up recently after discovering I can pull up Funimation ad free without a subscription. Appare-Ranman is easily worth your time. It's one of the coolest anime I have watched this year and gives some Jojo pt7 and a bit of Cowboy Bebop vibes. Just started Deca-Dence as well, and so far I really love it. It starts out with an already interesting set up and then throws a HUGE curve ball I don't think I could have seen coming early on.

That's not even everything but I guess that's most of the more memorable new stuff I have seen this year so far.... and the new Promised Neverland season is soon approaching..... holy shit I can't wait for that.... (best thriller anime I have seen in years if you haven't seen season 1. Please do that. You won't regret it)

You now have my complete and entire attention.

I need to finish that! I was really enjoying it but I think we missed a week and got distracted. We should rewatch it so we're all ready for season 2! I've heard nothing but great things about the manga!

Dude YES. The Promised Neverland is probably my favorite thing out of shonen jump in years. I loved Demon Slayer and I even like MHA plenty but I think Neverland is like their best stuff right now. Also I think a lot of people are turned off potnetially that Appare is a racing anime but it's so fucking good. I actually finished it earlier today and it's a lot less about the racing and more about this crazy mad max version of the old west with samurai, cowboys, native americans, and european car manufacturers (odd inclusion but you'll see how they play in). The cast is excellent and the character designs are top notch, plus it's really forward thinking in a lot of ways and tackles actual issues of the time period it's set in. The first few episodes are kind of a character introduction but I found them all reall engaging still. I hope they make more of it! It's an original anime concept so no source manga/light novel! The music is also pretty rad.

Holy crap this new anime season... so I have been watching a few lately as they come out.... and I gotta say, I got some you guys might enjoy but you're enjoyment of them might depend on how much you want to deal with themes of emotional trauma. That said, seeing as many of you like XENOSAGA, these first two might totally be your jam.

I'm gonna start with the one I feel is good but maybe a little less powerful with the theme, great concept though.

Otherside Picnic is a new one about a girl with no friends (at the start) meeting another, much more confident and happy girl in a place that's basically apocalyptic urban legend manifestation land (or kinda Mementos if you like persona) and kinda finding purpose in life as she helps this girl find her missing friend. It's been kinda monster of the week format so far but the meat of the show is more the relationship between the two building and coming to terms with losses. The characters have a pretty fun dynamic. I don't want to spoil too much but they're great. Give it a shot if you like how that sounds. Lots of fun little made up urban legends with their own wacky rules too.

Wonder Egg Priority is really beautiful. It's also very disturbing and horrific in a way at times. It's hard to justifiably even describe it but the premise is that a girl who is a shut-in going through emotional trauma finds a gatcha machine that sells eggs containing 'friends'. She's told that by buying and helping these 'friends' she can build up points to save the life of someone she lost. Everyone of the people she encounters when she goes into the world via these eggs is a person dealing with some sort of demon and she has to help every one of them overcome that demon. This typically plays out via fancy action sequences with keyblade-like weapons but only really ends when the victim comes to terms with things. I don't want to say anymore but it's really something and I can't wait to see where it goes. It can be pretty heart wrenching so watch at your own risk.

On a lighter note, but honestly also kinda one that deals with similar themes at times, is Mushoko Tensei, which is an isekai, so if you're not into that I get it but I have really enjoyed this one's approach a lot seeing as the guy in it is basically growing up throughout and has all his old memories still. It's a bit on the gross side at times with it's sexual humor (honestly some of those jokes hit though) and it's main character is shaping up to be pretty overpowered but I think the attention to detail is really good. Plus I kinda like the hopeful message it's sending. It can actually be a surprisingly sweet show at times.

I now understand why people like Jujutsu Kaisen so much. It's been a pretty awesome shonen so far. Characters are all super fun and it's made me laugh almost as much as it's insane action scenes have stunned me. Very much fits the shonen action formula but it's done super well and might have my favorite mentor character in Gojo. That dude is cool af. Plus that end theme totally slaps. Oh yeah, body horror warning though with that one. There's kind of a lot.

Other than that I have been watching a lot of sequel seasons to older stuff. I may make another post on those later anyway.

Jerami and I just watched Ore Monogatari!! together. (For some reason I thought it had come out in the last year or so but I looked it up and apparently it's from 2015? What is linear time.) Probably old news by now but I thought it was very cute and relatable. :3
